Guidance for Project Management Professionals: Managing Remote Relationships with Your Supervisor

When you and your supervisor are located in different cities or countries, proactive relationship management is crucial. To foster trust and accountability, consider the following:

  • Establish Clear Communication Norms: While frequent communication may seem necessary to bridge the distance, it can easily lead to information overload. Instead, determine a structured communication cadence that suits both of your needs and preferences. Decide whether a daily or weekly call, or perhaps a different rhythm, is most effective.
  • Cultivate Interpersonal Trust: Shared interests and common ground can significantly strengthen professional bonds. Take the initiative to share information about yourself with your supervisor, allowing them to get to know you better. Begin meetings with a brief personal and professional update, and reciprocate by inquiring about your supervisor’s activities.
  • Embrace Constructive Conflict Resolution: Avoidance of conflict can be detrimental to any team or organization. Develop skills in addressing disagreements and differing viewpoints in a respectful and productive manner.
  • Demonstrate Proactive Support: A willingness to go the extra mile to assist your supervisor can accelerate the development of trust and demonstrate your commitment to their success. Look for opportunities to provide help and support whenever possible.
