At work, many of our colleagues (or ourselves) suffer from addictions, depression, frustration, stress, mental health illnesses. 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental health problem in any given year.
That means that every person is likely to know someone who is experiencing a mental health problem – this makes mental health everybody’s business and demonstrates the need for community-led models of care that empower individuals where they live, work and play.
More often than not, such suffering is silent. Our colleagues want our love and understanding.
We must address the conversation of mental health at work. We HAVE to stop stigmatising those who suffer.
Join us for this candid, genuine and loving conversation about addressing mental health in the upcoming Hacking HR panel on “Mental Health First Aid: Essential Skills for HR Leaders.” This discussion is especially pertinent in today’s workplace and more so in high-stress environments like the military, as highlighted by the ongoing Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide in Australia.
Joining me are esteemed panelists:
Malvika Jethmalani , Co-Founder, Atvis Group
– Rashid, Deputy Director of HR, City of San José
Gwenevere Crary, SPHR, MSHR, SHRM-SCP, Founder and CEO, Guide to HR
– Christine Gibson, Physician and Trauma Specialist
Moderated by the dynamic Minola Jac, Hacking HR Ambassador.
For employees, poor mental health not only affects focus and performance but also interpersonal relationships, career progression, personal life, and even physical health. Employers, in turn, face decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and high turnover rates. Alarmingly, 68% of Millennials and 81% of Gen Zers have left jobs due to mental health reasons, underlining the strong connection between mental health and employee retention.
What People Think Mental Health Support Sounds Like:
– You’ll be fine!
– Don’t worry, it’s not a big deal…
What Support Actually Sounds Like:
– I’m sure that is really difficult
– I am here for you
– How can I help?
– I can’t imagine how that feels
– Thank you for telling me
– Your feelings are valid
– Give them a hug
– You are not alone
Our panel will delve into these issues, providing insights on how HR leaders can effectively address mental health challenges in the workplace, fostering a supportive environment for all employees.
I encourage you to join this crucial conversation. What are your thoughts or questions on mental health first aid in HR? How can we as HR leaders better support our employees and improve retention? Your input is invaluable and will enrich our panel discussion.
Looking forward to an engaging and enlightening conversation. See you there!
